so this is our third and final video on how to search for patents this video is presented by patent file org which is a provisional patent filing resource for inventors and this whole presentation is available on the website patent org so in this example we're going to talk about searching patent classes before I do that I'm going to go back to our Google patent search and take another look at the patent class system so here we are back at our Google patents screen as you can see they have a little heading here for a current US patent class system and as I've started to notice that I've been writing down as I'm doing my searching that I keep seeing this one 1 4 / 3 4 7 or 1 1 4 / 3 6 3 patent class system and so what I'm going to do is I'm going to go over to the u.s. PTO website the address is uspto.gov / web slash patents / classification and this is going to bring up my patent class search screen and so I'm going to type in my 1 1 for 1 1 for 3 for 7 and see what that brings up and as it turns out if I scroll up to the very top here class 1 1 4 has to do with ships so apparently my canoe seat is gonna fall under this larger category of ships so 1 1 4 3 4 7 has to do with canoes or kayaks so that's great that's a that's probably a good class for me to search in and remember we also had the class 1 1 4 3 6 3 and some 1 1 4 3 6 3 has to do with seats and a foot support for boats our boat components so either one of these classes would be a good area for me to kind of dive into and search and so the way you can do that from this patent screen is every time you see a blue a that will link you to currently pending patent applications that are in that class and subclass wherever you see a red P if you click on that that will pull up all of the issue patents in that class or subclass so let's go to our class 1 look for 3 4 7 and click on the red P buttoned button and again this is for the canoe or kayak class and this says that it found 288 issue patents because we're in the P section P for patents 288 issued patents that were in the class relating to canoes or kayaks and so you can either start clicking through these one at a time or an even better strategy would be to click the link up here that says quick and that's going to open up the USPTO search screen and again this is for issue patents and I'm going to type in 1 1 4 comma 3 4 7 which was class subclass relating to canoes and kayaks in the drop-down field I'm gonna change this to current US classification and then I can start playing around with different search terms that I'm interested in so for my hypothetical example we're doing a canoe seat so if I type in seat and let's say I just choose the title field and hit Search I get about 16 results so these are going to be very closely related to my invention because these should all be seats in the canoe or kayak subclass and then so you can start playing around with different terms like foldable seat or floating seat or over all the different terms for your invention and the problem with the US Patent Office search system is that when you click on one of their patents this is the search screen that you get and you can see it's not as clean or as crisp as Google it doesn't give you the image is it doesn't give you the link to download the PDF so I hate to tell you to go back but really I like to go back to Google pens advanced search screen and then under the current US classification we can type in our class 1 1 4 3 4 7 and then in the title screen type in seat hit search and we have a lot better easier to navigate searching system so I hope this video was helpful for you please visit our website patent file or to learn more about provisional patents and other neat patent searching tricks thank you
Thanks for your comment Lynna Krise, have a nice day.

this video is just a few quick tips to get you up and running with classification searching here we go first google patents is where i do most of my patent searching but there are a couple of tools that tend to be superior when it comes to classification searching and where i would like you to go instead of google patents is espacenet.com when you go there you can see right here there's several tabs and classification searching is one of them this is something that is probably the best search on the web when it comes to classification searching you can start with any one of these categories and it's just a matter of drilling down to get to what you want the other thing that you can do is go up into the search bar and type in something that you're interested in once you do that you'll get a series of results and if you're interested in something in particular here we have cycle frames what you can do is click down and the basic thing that you're interested in doing to drill down and find what is most critical to you or the classification that's important to you is to start by looking at the dots and you start by looking at the first dot and you say is the thing i'm looking for characterized by material or cross section of frame members if the answer is yes you would drill further down and look at further dots if the answer is no you may scroll down until you find something else say and when you do scroll down what you would scroll down to is not the subsequent higher number of dots you would scroll down to the next one so the second question you would ask yourself if the first answer was no is does the invention i'm looking for have joints between frame members in this case we'll say the answer is yes and you may look and say a follow-up question if the answer is yes are they welded soldered or brazed if the answer to that is yes you can see under here there are no more specific categories so this would be the category that you're looking for or the classification that you're looking for it's b 62k 19 20. how you would read this is that you're interested in cycle frames with joints between frame members and those joints are welded soldered or braised once you decide that's what you're interested in you can check that box and what you would be doing by checking that box is giving yourself the opportunity to look for patents that are specifically in the category of cycle frames that have joints between frame members that are welded soldered or brazed to look in that category you go to find patents on the left hand side you have the list of patents that fulfill all those characteristics and are in that classification you can click on individual references and review those something you need to understand about the classification system is that it goes from broad to narrow so if you start with a classification that says b 92k that by itself is a pretty broad category if you put that in and you search a broad category you're going to have a tremendous number of patents that are inside of that category once you start adding additional categorizations on there they're basically subcategories and then subcategories within subcategories like adding the 1920 on the end of the b92k then you are in a very narrow classification and only a small number a relatively small number you may find hundreds of patents but it is relatively small in that it's not ten thousand patents that you're looking for so you need to understand each time you search and you use classifications to limit your search that you're searching in a group that at least you know how big the group is so you don't want to be searching in a very small group and think that you've done a very broad search if you are interested in searching in google patents and that's where you're most comfortable you can take the classifications that you find on espacenet.com for example you can go search b62k in google patents it will recognize that you're searching in a international classification and give you things that are in that international classification if you want to go very narrow that's the broad classification b62k if you want to search in the individual smaller classification you can give google patents the b62k put in a spacebar and then put 1920 it will also recognize that i hope you're able to use these classification tools to help you have a better search good luck searching
Thanks Fumiko your participation is very much appreciated
