the executive order comes exactly two years after the death of george floyd murdered at the hands of a minneapolis police officer his death has prompted many people and even businesses to take the call of black lives matter more seriously but with juneteenth right around the corner there are questions and concerns about who's genuinely honoring the meaning of this holiday and who's just trying to cash in on it tori mason with more on that tonight in torrey denver certainly known for its june teen celebrations yes jim and juneteenth is getting a lot more visibility nationwide and some companies they're sinking their teeth in but many people think a lot of this uh juneteenth decor coming out is just a bit tone deaf denver's long been a leader in juneteenth celebrations and now it's a city state and federal holiday there are a bunch of folks trying to figure out how to properly celebrate norman harris runs juneteenth music festival he spent years highlighting the day's significance so it's frustrating to see products like this i would ask you know brands like walmart are they really interested in connecting with communities connecting with organizations so they can properly curate things of this nature a brewery in five points made sure they branded better this year we did a light american lager the owners of spanglang did more than slap juneteenth on a can we really wouldn't have attempted to do it if we didn't think we couldn't do it right and the way we did it right was by working directly with the community here in five points harris helped guide the brewers with concept and flavor local artist jermaine jude designed the label you're not taking advantage of the holiday you're honoring them exactly juneteenth involves educating a nation there's no shame in asking how to celebrate it right this might serve as an example you know motivate some other folks to maybe knock on our doors so we can help curate this the right the proper way now of course juneteenth isn't the only holiday that companies are trying to market and make money off of but a lot of people behind the holiday are trying to preserve its meaning before we get to the point of like i don't know like juneteenth mattress sale if you have any questions about how to celebrate juneteen properly you can always contact juneteenth music festival we're live in denver tori mason covering colorado first

the people have spoken and the retail giant walmart has listened tonight tonight the company is pulling their juneteenth themed ice cream off shelves and they're also apologizing tonight this online photo started all of the controversy look at that foolishness before walmart took this out of stores their marketing team landed on swirl red and velvet and cheesecake as their flavor for juneteenth month ice cream i asked my next guest if the dessert puts a bad taste in their mouth for juneteenth carissa when you take a look at this juneteenth ice cream as a business owner your thoughts on it how are you feeling about this juneteenth ice cream way to go capitalism that is the first thing i thought about look at how capitalism took off in the in the infancy of the juneteenth celebration of being mandated by the federal government and now we're just like oh we have juneteenth ice cream now no make sure they don't put out slavery ice free chocolate fake right with the different color shades of black folks and all that right exactly yeah dr when you see this are you surprised at this and do you think it's appropriate inappropriate or what so i was actually shocked i can't lie i was shocked and on on some level i also had a sense of relief right because when i see this imaging i'm thinking so where's the angel mama and all the other craziness that they could add on to it so i felt like they had some restraint you know on some level but then at the same time they don't really have credibility with the community right this is the same place that isn't giving people full-time you know hours they're not giving people the insurance that they need and yet they want to commercialize and profit on a black struggle and i guess for me also the timing of it you know we're in a time where people have been getting gunned down you know in buffalo we got the police stuff that we're struggling with we are tired and hurting we don't need this extra stuff added on top of everything else and do you caress or do you think it's poor marketing they just didn't think it through there's no one like you and i on the marketing table in the boardroom to say ah come on now put the brakes on this one right right and that's the first thing i also thought about as well to piggyback um off the doctor is because you go into the community and we feel as though we're being unheard because we have so many like myself we have so many black entrepreneurs you can collaborate you know when it comes to marketing collaborate with the people in the community that way you can gain trust you can build a bridge when it comes to young black uh entrepreneurs like myself and say okay well these are the ideas that we have how about we collaborate with you all and say is this something that you will feel as though it's supportive that is a reflect is a full reflection of the black community you know and obviously once again it's something that they just decided to say well this sounds good let's just put that on there and we're just going to serve it to the people and if they like it graded if not then unfortunately you know so um thankfully we have you know this type of platform and other platforms out there and our voices will be heard it seems as though even though they tried to ignore or end our silence our voices will be heard and think off of social media because now this particular creative director may say oh maybe i did get it wrong maybe we need to go back to the drawing board and it will also um show some type of um this can this conversation just like other conversations can be a catalyst for change you know so hopefully it will be that now dr obasi what would be a good way the community or black people in general could send a message to this company saying we just don't like this besides social media yeah i think social media is one avenue just to get the word out there pretty quickly and i think the other piece is that we need to organize and we need to get in front of these walmarts and protest you know get get the news media out to get this coverage out there because i actually don't think this is going away i mean if you look at the actual ice cream container they actually trademarked juneteenth i mean that's that's insane does walmart own juneteenth now right right and so i lost it at the tm part but and then i think you take on top of that just the language on there i think it says something like share and celebrate african-american culture emaciate emancipation and enduring hope like really like all we got is hope at this juncture are you going to make money off of our hope you know none of that stuff just sat well with me and i and i feel like they need they need to hear the voice of the community they need the partner i agree with uh what carissa was saying they we have people who are doing this as their full-time jobs karissa's right an actual african-american woman you know you know so yeah i definitely agree yeah i had something like this impact you or have an effect on you carissa as a business owner who's selling frozen treats out there right um it's it's funny because before i it was some of my colleagues actually said hey did you see this and i was like what was it it was like this this is juneteenth ice cream and i was like really and you know i kind of did a little bit more research to see if they did collaborate with you know people in the community to see if it was something where it was a collaborative point and it wasn't and it just um to say that customers and colleagues and vendors we've all been talking about it and they were you know and it's just it's it's disheartening you know um and only because i'm like just like myself and i've been doing this for a few [ __ ] for a few years now and it's like just just come to us i mean we are we're here we're willing to be at the table or to be on the meeting at the meetings and so forth and i'm just it just feels like we're unheard and it's it it's as if i'm just ignored you know um but as i said i always feel as though there's always a silver lining and i always feel as though there's an open path of communication between two parties and more so yeah got it well we'll see what happens thank you all for joining us here on the factor on censor tonight
