How to start a wellness brand

Comment by Garfield Garen

thank you so much for being with me here today happy new year today what i'm going to talk about is how to start a wellness business on the side in less than five hours per week yes and less than five hours per week i know we're all super busy but my key objectives in this short call and video is that you walk away with your simple action steps that you can actually start implementing today with the tools and resources that you already have okay so okay so this is how to start your wellness business on the site in less than five hours per week so some of the first things that you have to have in order to have a business is you need to have a solution to a problem so stop whatever you've been doing to try to start your business and start thinking about a problem that you're trying to solve when i started my career gosh almost two decades ago the problem that i was looking to solve was obesity and helping people lose weight the problem as i continued to learn from people that were struggling with weight loss is that they wanted to get rapid results they didn't care about lifestyle behavior changes they just wanted to lose the weight fast they wanted a diet they wanted a quick solution and so i had to take a step back from trying to teach people lifestyle behavior changes and meet them where they were and then give them what they needed to know and understand to continue to make change and progress so i want you to really pause for a second and think about the problem that you are trying to solve for other people and think about what value what service or product you offer that is going to solve their problem that is the only thing you should be focusing on right now is what is the problem and then listen to people and then come up with your solution the second thing that you should be focusing on is um talking to people and building an audience reaching out to everybody that you know and saying hey you know i'm starting this new business and i'm looking to see if you know anybody that will need my help with losing weight with improving their digestion their gut health with working out with getting fit whatever it is that you that you do and say and you know that i'm good at this because of my experience and x y and z or talk a little bit about you know your experience your education and what you've been doing because they know that you're the expert and then after that just say you know if i would love it if you could forward this to your friends or if you're interested let me know or know anybody that's interested i'd appreciate your referral really that's the only that's the second thing you should be doing first figure out the problem solution second tell everybody that you know about what you're doing and yes ask for referrals the third thing that i would suggest you focus on with your you know limited time is providing value and you can do this several ways right through social media through an email list through webinars through giving presentations um but really focus on giving value be the person that if you are involved in um in groups in social media or on facebook be the person that responds to people's questions i see a lot of times coaches being out there posting things that are just kind of like quotes they're just you know they're not really providing value so what i suggest you do and why i found helpful is that instead you be the one that reads people's posts and comments like answer people's questions search for the hashtag like weight loss and and and look for people that are looking for solutions be the person that always uh brings value and that my friend are that those are the things that you should be focusing on as you're building up your business you know don't over invest time on social media trying to have the perfect page or you know the perfect post when you focus on the problem that you're trying to solve and when you focus on refining your solution and testing it on other people to make sure it works that is key secondly in order to have a business you need to have people to sell to so therefore focusing constantly on growing your audience is key the third thing is being the person that gives value so whether you're going to be making videos or answering people's questions or commenting and liking other people's posts that is key the last thing that i'll leave you with is consistency and frequency this is a mistake that i made early on that yes i regret i wish i would have stuck to it um but i told myself okay i'm going to write a weekly blog i'm going to do a weekly video and a daily post and it was just way too much that i didn't i wasn't consistent with anything so this year i'm practicing what i preach i wipe the slate clean i'm committing to a monthly blog post because if i would have done that last year and been realistic i would have had 12 high quality blog posts right that that seo would have picked up all my keywords and my key phrases anyways so whatever you choose to do be consistent so if on monday you spend one hour on social media make sure that in that hour you're commenting you're liking you're answering people's questions before you start putting out content when you pause to listen and read about what other people are talking about and posting about you get more clarity and ideas on what the real problem is okay um for example maybe on tuesdays that could be dedicated to writing your weekly blog or working on your weekly video or something that you're going to give value right the third week maybe you can focus on one hour reaching out to everybody that you know and telling them what you're up to asking for referrals reaching out to people that may want to invite you as a guest speaker or something like that so that is how when you're building your business those are the only key things you should be focusing on not building your website not having the perfect instagram page or trying to get a million subscribers right to have a business you need to um have an offer or solution or service that solves somebody's problem and in order to have a business it means that you're generating revenue or income okay so i'm going to pause and stop the recording see if there's any questions but if you're watching the replay go ahead and leave your comments and questions down below if you have friends that want to subscribe to my bi-weekly email where i'm going to be sending you more tips and recaps go ahead and subscribe below my background is in corporate wellness i've been in corporate wellness for almost two decades and i would love to help you get into corporate wellness i'll have more videos on that but also if you want to target corporate wellness as you become a health coach or as you build your wellness business on the side i think i may have some insight that can help you um but then also if you're just looking to start a wellness business on the side and leverage um the online space i can definitely help you as well okay so happy new year this is their first video of the year and let's just keep growing and getting better together bye

alright guys introducing you all to tall yes yes there we go and she is the founder of the den meditation which as you guys know this entire practice has just completely taken over this industry and she is really really going to be talking about the art of marketing something that feels so personal and is something that you're not necessarily selling but you are and there's a voice around it I'm gonna let her tell you all about it but there you go and again if you guys have questions just raise your hand and we'll grab right come right to you hello so let me tell you a little bit about myself first I'm the CEO and founder of den meditation which is one of the first drop in meditation studios and it is located here in Los Angeles but weird like Kate I had 16 years in entertainment my last job was running comedy at NBC and when I was there is when I started actually meditating high-stress job I was going through a divorce lots of [ __ ] that made me want to meditate and it was there that I started realizing how am I gonna get a regular practice I'm one of those people I'm sure a lot of you can really I kind of need to show up somewhere to do something it's really hard for me I wish I could do sit-ups at home I wish I was that human being so badly I would just have a way better figure but I'm not and so I was struggling when I was at NBC even though I was putting it my schedule doing a regular program so I kept getting online and looking for a place to go before work or after work or even like sneak away during lunch and it didn't exist and I couldn't man I'm a good Google searcher like I really am and I put in every version of it did not pop up and I was actually baffled I'm like you can do everything cross-training Pilates yoga booty ballet boxing and there was no meditation so the idea started percolating I don't know how much you guys know about entertainment there's a thing we do in the spring and television where you go to New York you sell your fall schedule to the advertisers okay someone's nodding it's called up front so when I was there for up front another very stressful time I was like oh I want to do it I'm in New York it has to exist here did not exist in New York I couldn't believe it I ended up at the Dharma Center for three hours now I love that stuff it was amazing for me but that's when the idea crystallized and I said to myself who has three hours to do this every time they want to meditate most people do not also when you go somewhere like the Dharma Center which is one lineage it feels a little alienating for some people it can be intimidating you feel like are they gonna smell that I eat meat are they gonna realize I drank last night like you start to get nervous that you can't be yourself fully and that's when it totally crystallized there has to be a place where meditation seems normal and easy and everybody can do it now you guys try and rewind a couple years ago because right now everyone's talking about meditation so I need you to get in your head space that this idea was really novel at the time every time I mentioned I wanted to do it people thought I was crazy they're like who the [ __ ] wants to meditate what is it it's scary we're led of course right okay too late I'm from New Jersey I'm just practicing so so anyway so the idea crystallized and that's when I ended when my job ended in NBC is when I started the foundation for the dead so they've done a few stats we open our doors two years ago February 1st 2016 as one of the first meditations drop in meditation studios within 18 months so less than two years we open up our second studio which is located in Studio City we also were already passed our first round of our 400 our teacher training which is amazing as anyone who is in this industry it's a great form of revenue and also while you're growing you're really certifying your own people and you can make sure they know what they're doing and we also had retreats already happening so now we're just over two years and were just about at 20,000 people physically walking in our doors so it's been an amazing couple years and again if you can rewind with an idea that we didn't even know how to sell it to people which is why I'm here to talk to you about how can you sell something what is your marketing strategy how can you brand it now a lot of what Kate talked about and I think this whole thing is gonna be about is vision what do you want and why do you want to do it and I want to start that because when they asked me to do this talk I freaked out because I was like I don't think like that I didn't actually sit down and delineate a marketing strategy on business so much of it was just pouring out of me because I had this idea look I also had a producing background so I know how to make things happen but still it was really interesting for me to kind of look backwards and hone in on what was the vision and what was the strategy so one of the things is we had a huge challenge and the challenge was nobody knew meditation really not yet at this point it wasn't being talked about it felt very woowoo it felt very hippyish and that was innate to the idea and of itself how can we make meditation more accessible so we took our challenge and really made it our strategy and I say that with a little fake it till you make it what I mean by that was perception is also based on presentation so for us we really went into this mindfully not to overuse that word but I probably will but we really went into it mindfully of we got to present ourselves as a company that's been around for five years or more we can't look like a brand-new company this is such a brand new idea people are gonna freak out walk the other way they're not gonna hand over dollars to do something that they think is weird so that was a big deal for us and it really took a lot of concentration so before we open our doors we made sure that throughout the whole thing it our space looked professional or website looked professional it we had our logo everything had to give off an air of a business that's just been around a lot longer we needed a gain trust and confidence and that's always been our main tenant how can we get them to trust us so let's start with this space have any of you been there by the way has anyone been to the den okay well if you want and by the way feel free I know it can get boring staring at someone I'm happy if you have the Google Chrome that you can search images of the den if you want to look so the space is really something and I will say what's been cool about the space for me is when I had the vision of doing this the space was so vivid and so clear in my mind to the brick walls to the color how it had a look and how it had to feel so the reason we're talking about the space is because the space was essential to the marketing strategy people had to walk in and feel comfortable there is not a Buddha head in there even though we have Buddhism says there's nothing that specifies a certain religion or any way of thinking we have T we have coffee you can kind of see it there it's comfortable it should feel like the everyman living ro
