hello my name is ruth carter and i'm a licensed attorney in arizona and this is your question of the day so somebody asked me how can i get a copyright to my own quotes and poems that i wrote all right good question so let's back up you get a copyright in your original works of authorship that are fixed in any tangible medium so when it comes to a poem if it's something that you've written down typed into your computer even like put into your phone the second that that file exists you have a copy right from the moment that it's created quotes i would want to see how long of a quote are we talking about because the u.s copyright act does not provide copyright protection for short phrases because they say that there's not enough there to be an original work of authorship so but if it is you know like a sentence multiple sentences that could be enough that you have an original work of authorship that is protected by copyright so under the law you have a copyright the moment the work is created in some type of tangible medium which could be pencil to paper fingers to keyboard even like you know spray paint to a wall um if you want to register it then you would have to go through copyright.gov um you can do it online you don't have to register to get your rights you do have to register if you're going to sue so these are types of situations that i tell people to go talk to a lawyer to work out a strategy for protecting your intellectual property so that way you know how you want to respond if someone violates your rights before it happens so that way it's just like you have an action plan you just have to execute on it so i hope this has been helpful copyright.gov is a really helpful website they have what they call the circulars which provides a lot of valuable information about copyright in general so if you have general questions i recommend going there first and as always watching this video does not create an attorney-client relationship with any viewer it merely contains legal information not legal advice if you need legal advice go hire somebody i put out new content every week so please subscribe to the channel and until then i will catch up with you later take care
Thanks for your comment Granville Thull, have a nice day.

hi my name is Laura and today I'm going to talk with you about how to copy write a poem I'm going to give you some elements for the poor man's copyright which is basically to get a hold of a regular Militello envelope and to address it to yourself the day that you finish the poem to your liking and you wanted to be copyrighted you're gonna print it off and put it into your envelope you're gonna seal it and you're going to date the the date that you sent this to yourself on the inside and of course it's also gonna be dated whenever you send it and so you're going to send this to yourself and you're not going to open it this will serve as proof in court that you mailed this to yourself on the day that you said you did and that this is your work today there are really not a whole lot of ways to save yourself from being ripped off other than doing that and also maybe registering it but you can also just use the copyright symbol and put that next to your your particular comb or your at the end of your work or on the very title page of your play or whatever you're doing and then that way that serves as a deterrent for people who want to steal your stuff but really there's no way for someone to pretend as though they did what you have done if you have it on your computer and you have sent it to yourself in this sort of hard copy format so that is the way to copyright a poem
Thanks Eulalia your participation is very much appreciated
