do you ever get the feeling that people want something in a particular um I've been getting a ton of comments when it comes to a copyright for your book so today I thought I would go ahead and address the elephant in the room how to copyright your book for free we're gonna discuss that in today's video stay tuned and if you'd like to enter for your chance to win $5000 in the North Street prize competition stay tuned towards the end I'm gonna give you some more details hey it's Dale here I'm gonna go ahead and talk a little bit more about copywriting your book for free and of course stick around to the very end because I'm gonna tell you a safeguard when it comes to copywriting your book because I'm gonna show you some basics in today's video but the very end is where I'm gonna kind of tie it all together but briefly what exactly is a copyright well it's a form of protection for any original works of authorship across any tangible medium of expression now that's nerd talk for pretty much saying if you type it if you write it if you talk it if you record it in some capacity its copyrighted but the million-dollar question is how do you copyright your book well according to the US Patent and Trademark Office this is a frequently misunderstood topic because many people believe you must register your work before you claim copyright however no publication registration or other action in the Copyright Office is required to secure copyright copyright is secured automatically when the work is created and the work is quote unquote created when it's fixed in a quote unquote copy or phonorecords for the first time so just to repeat myself just to repeat myself myself you heard dad jokes here I just want you to understand that as soon as you put pen to paper as soon as you do that first keystroke as soon as you turn on your tape recorder as soon as you turn on your video camera you are creating a copyright of your work it's your creative authorship that you're putting out into the world but big but here's there's a catch you must file a copyright for these particular occasions and this includes the staff pushing public records so if you really want the entire world to know that yeah I officially have you know stake my claim this is my copyright I did this book rather than just relying on hearsay or maybe even time stamps on a specific you know Microsoft Word manuscript of some sort this is a way to actually get it in public records so you have irrefutable proof that you are the copyright holder for this particular work the next thing is going to be you're gonna need a copyright in cases of copyright infringement so if you have to take someone to court in a lawsuit or someone takes you to court in a lawsuit you're going to need to have that copyright now there are some discrepancies when it comes to specific time conditions for a copyright and when it comes to infringement Sande lawsuits so you don't wanna make sure you visit the USPTO site I'm gonna leave a link down inside the description down below you can take a look at that and the lastly you're allowed to file with US Customs we have a copyright filed in public record so that way you can pretty much stopped any importing of infringing copies so let's just say for instance someone over in China yeah for some reason loves your book they go ahead and start to illegally print it onto some type of books and they try to send it to the US well US customs if they catch them can stop that import and send it right back and that is another way to kind of protect you know those occasions obviously are not gonna be as often as you would think but it still is there but should you file a copyright that's the big question I'm gonna answer that in just a moment but before I do I want to bring to your attention the sixth annual North Street food prize competition where you can enter to win a grand prize of $5,000 and they're giving out over $12,500 to the winners of this competition and this is available to all self-published authors every year between mid-february to late June and it's actually a recommended contest by the Alliance of independent authors and it's also available to six different category types and the top seven winners will receive additional benefits to market their books which is pretty freakin cool these categories include mainstream literary fiction genre fiction creative nonfiction and memoir poetry children's picture books graphic novels and memoirs if you have any book in that and it's been published any time at all it wasn't just this year it could be years past you can enter to win find out more details over at winning writers dot-com slash Dale and if you win please let me know I would definitely applaud you for that oh and you got to get it in by June 30th 2020 otherwise you're gonna miss out on the sixth annual and you'll have to wait for the seventh annual don't wait submit now okay so should you file a copyright this depends now I'm gonna tell you why it depends because if you're a hobbyist if you're just you know you're putting out your books because you want to publish your stuff you're not so concerned about making money then chances are very likely you probably won't need that you know cuz in all likelihood you probably won't sell that many copies and the likelihood of someone stealing it is probably greatly diminished now is it impossible no but still nonetheless it doesn't make sense for you to invest in a copyright if you're just going at this business for the fun of it now you're building a business then this is a great possibility here's the deal if either of those are situations that you're involved in depends on your discretionary expense now don't go and spend thousands of dollars on a copyright literally you can go to the US Patent and Trademark Office website and file it for $55 online or you can do it eighty five dollars for a mail in copyright registration I'm gonna refer you over to my good buddy Dave chess and the Kindle preneur on his channel he actually walks you through the entire process for doing the copyright the links gonna be an inscription down below hey if you found today video very useful could you do me a huge favor you know if you want to learn more about writing and publishing books itself make sure of course you hit the subscribe ring the bell notification icon so you don't miss a single one of these videos and speaking of videos I think you might like this next video series I'm gonna send you over into I'm actually sure you step-by-step from point A to point B to Point C and how to self publish a book I will see you in the very next video
Thanks for your comment Majorie Erker, have a nice day.

what does it mean to copyright a book and why should you care I'm going to tell you coming up hey guys and gals boys and girls authors and author wannabes hope you're having a fantastic day your old buddy Tim back again to dispense a little wit wisdom and advice on the topic of writing editing and publishing your own books now what I do on this program is I answer questions submitted by viewers like you people who you know they must be busier than me or they're just too damn lazy it's easier to just ask me the question because I'll go find the answer for you and that's okay I know you're busy you're busier than me hey today's question before I jump into the question let me do this really quick see that red button down there it says submit or subscribe or something like that things to subscribe click on that subscribe to the channel then you'll get the little Bell notification icon if you click on that every time I publish a new video YouTube out of the goodness of its heart will let you know about it you can also give me a thumbs up if you like what I do and also below in the description is a link to my website where you can go sign up for my newsletter list I'll never spam you I hate spammers gut them like a deer but I will keep you apprised of things going on in my world and just for joining the list I will let you download a free digital copy of my book angel of mercy I just choked myself up out of the extent of my giving so hey let's get back to the topic at hand as i said what i do is i answer questions submitted by viewers like you this one comes from charles charles says Tim do I need to copyright my book great question Charles well I get quite a lot a lot of people are concerned about copyright they're concerned about plagiarism the good news Charles is your book is copyrighted the moment you you put it to some medium other than your brain and by that I mean a copyright exists the moment the work is created and put on paper or type into a computer or paint it on a canvas even scribbled on a napkin as soon as you take that idea from inside your head Charles and put it into a format that you can reproduce basically it is automatically copyrighted now now understand you can't copyright an idea if you just got an idea in your head or it's really like I have an idea for copywriting I have an idea rather for improving a microphone well that's more of a patent than a copyright so you can't really copyright an idea but you can't copyright things like books plays musicals artwork you can copyright software software code architectural drawings but the good news is you don't have to really do anything to legally copyright a work other than put that work to some medium that's not in your head now you can go over to the Copyright Office the US government Copyright Office and pay I think it's 30 or 50 bucks to formerly copyright a work that's not required but if someone does infringe on your copyright in order to sue them in court you must have the copyright legally registered with the US government Copyright Office so it might be worth your while to spend that thirty five fifty five bucks to get that done again not not necessary okay what I do in my own books is I just put a page right in the front that says copyright you know you got the little circle with a C inside Tim Knox 2017 what-have-you all rights reserved you can find that statement of copyright anywhere on the web or hit me up in the comments and I'll put it in below and that's all I have to do my book is automatically copyrighted and again if someone infringes it I have to have that copyright over on the copyright website now I'm not a lawyer I don't pretend to be a lawyer but I do believe that when it comes to registration it's what they call first registered or first use maybe maybe I've written my book and I published it five years ago it's automatically copyright II well maybe someone my book put their name on it and put the copyright on official basis on the copyright gov website well because I can prove that I actually had this copyright years before I'm gonna win that all right so again you don't have to do a formal registration but it is kind of good to have not necessary but kind of good if you've got the money by all means go for it if you don't just put a standard copyright notice in the front of your book and don't worry about it people are so paranoid about people ripping them off I mean you know if your ideas were that great you'd be making more money up now a few things that you cannot copy right you cannot copy right in the title of your book there are lots of books out there with the same title I think there's probably like a hundred books named it there's a lot of especially in the romance genre you're gonna see a lot of the same titles so you cannot copyright a title you cannot copyright your name slogans or short phrases you are you can't copyright those so if you do copyright your book and your book is called you know Amazon women from Mars which there's another book entitled that you can use that title but you can't copyright it does that make sense you can't copyright title name slogans or short phrases what am I missing here what's the length of a copyright that's a good question to charles copyrights typically are enforced from the the life Plus 70 years now what that means is if I live to be a hundred years old and I die my copyright is protected for another seventy years now there's also a periods of 95 and 120 but those depends on the nature of authorship and I'm not an expert go over to copyright dot-gov which is the official US Patent and Trademark copyright office and they've got the lowdown there so put your copyright in your book first use you can't do titles names etc etc otherwise Charles you're good you're good to go write your book put it down on paper get it out of that thick head of yours get it on something that you can actually copyright and put in a copyright page and you should be good to go okay I'm gonna copyright this video I think that's brilliant I'm a copywriter so hey if you have a question you would like for me to use on the program drop it in the comments below and if I do use your comment in a video you will get a free digital copy of one of my books I'll let you choose don't forget subscribe click like and go over to the website sign up for the newsletter list and you get a free copy of a book over there as well holy moly I'm givin away the farm one book at a time what if I can copyright that give it away the farm no I didn't think so alright guys that's it go have a good time like subscribe ring my bell download a book and by all means go create something you can copyright
Thanks bestyrex your participation is very much appreciated
